Delta Academy (DA) 2007-08...

SMLAC’s Delta Academy rolls out during the fall of each year and runs through May of the next year. This fantastic program is aimed at young girls in grades 6th-8th. The Academy was created out of an urgent sense that “bold action is needed to save our young females from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures”. Delta Academy provides an opportunity for SMLAC to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive in DeKalb County schools.  A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century. With that in mind our local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has designed a program built around the following themes: mathematics/science, self-esteem, physical health/wellness, technology, leadership, community service, non-traditional careers and much more!  The program is scheduled to meet once per month at Miller Grove Middle School, (usually the 1st Saturday), beginning in October and this year we are extending our area and introducing the "NEW" Delta Academy - Conyers.  Meeting location for Delta Academy - Conyers will be announced soon. Lastly, we anticipate closing the year out with a field trip to a historical site or museum which will include both programs.
Postmark Deadline for the 2007-08 Delta Academy  application was September 30, 2007!  If you would like to participate in the 2007-08 Delta Academy program, please select application, parental consent, and respect code

For additional questions or more information, please feel free to contact us at educationaldevelopment@smlacdst.org.

Delta GEMS (DG) 2007-08
A Signature Program for DeKalb County High School Girls!

Delta GEMS “Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully” can be viewed as a roadmap for college and career planning.  Each component is designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflecting and individual growth.

The purpose of Delta GEMS is to form a continuum of services and to address the specific needs of young African American Women between the ages of 14-18 in the high school grades.  The latest stats reveal a steady decline in the enrollment of African-Americans in institutions of higher learning.  As the job market becomes increasingly competitive and desirous of adroit employees, it is imperative that we become more active in providing the tools and the skills that will equip our young women to attain a more productive quality of life.  Delta GEMS can be viewed as a road map for college and career planning and will instill in girls the need to excel academically.  It will also assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for the future beyond high school and will hopefully create compassionate, caring and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

Postmark Deadline for the 2007-08 Gems application was September 30, 2007.  The interviews and the "Welcome Reception" was held in October 2007.  If you would like to apply for this awesome opportunity for educational enhancement, please select application2007-08 GEMS Flyer, or Goals.  If you participated in the 2005-06 or 2006-07 Delta GEMS program, please select renewal for your application.  Please remember to check back frequently for more information on this application process.
